John Aldridge says that the club should consider signing a proven goalscorer
Former Liverpool star John Aldridge says that the club should consider signing a proven goalscorer in order to act as a replacement for Luis Suarez.
The inability to score goals was a major factor in the club finishing outside the top four once again last season. Even though Brendan Rodgers had brought Mario Balotelli as the replacement for Luis Suarez, the Italian international disappointed immensely after scoring only one league goal throughout the campaign. The situation became more desperate due to the injury crisis faced by striker Daniel Sturridge. Liverpool have been one of the active clubs in the summer transfer window by bringing players like Nathaniel Clyne.
However, Aldridgehas recognised a need for a top striker as the priority number one for the Reds. After scoring almost 3 goals per game during the campaign in which Luis Suarez was named as the PFA Player of the Year, the club went on to averaging only just over a goal per game against last season. They have signed defenders likeClyne while midfielders like James Milner and Firmino should provide the club with a lot of strength in depth especially considering the departure of a big name like Steven Gerrard in this position.
The future of star Raheem Sterling also does not to be sorted out and he is widely expected to leave.”I’m very happy with Nathaniel Clyne as we needed someone in that position, the Brazilian Firmino should slot right in and Milner is a good signing following the departure of Steve Gerrard. But they have not signed the 20-goal-a-season player they really need. Unfortunately Sturridge will not deliver that many goals and Ings will struggle to get the chances in his first season. They haven’t replaced Suarez and that’s what they had to do. You need someone who will score 20-plus goals season in, season out and they still haven’t got that player,” said Aldridge.
